Sedimentary Geology and Environmental Change

The Physics of Climate and Climate Change

Descripción

The Physics of Climate and Climate Change group (https://igeo.ucm-csic.es/investigacion/departamentos/geologia-sedimentaria-y-cambio-mediambiental/fisica-del-clima-y-cambio-climatico-clima/) is a research group of the CSIC based at IGEO. The mission of the group is to improve the physical understanding of the climate system, its evolution, impacts and the mechanisms responsible for climate variability and change at different temporal and spatial scales, with the vision of advancing the multiple dimensions of climate change and contributing to current societal challenges. The group's activity is summarised in two lines of research based on experimentation and modelling (Figure 1) with the aim of providing an integrated approach to the functioning of the climate system:

- Physics of climate: investigates basic aspects of climate subsystems and their variability (atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, lithosphere, etc.), including internal physical processes and subsystem interactions (ocean-atmosphere, ice-ocean, stratosphere-troposphere, troposphere-lithosphere, etc.) on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, from sub-seasonal to millennial.

- Climate change: studies the evolution of the climate system, including responses to external forcings, to reduce uncertainty and improve the quantification of past, present and future climate changes, their impacts and the explanation of their causes, on scales ranging from paleoclimatic to short- and medium-term future predictions (sub-seasonal to decadal scales) and projections under different climate change scenarios

Currently, the group has 8 permanent researchers with dual affiliation, in addition to a large number of researchers, including postdocs and PhD students, hired through projects and competitive calls. The group collaborates with research groups of the UCM: Stratospheric and Tropospheric REsearch And Modeling (STREAM, https://www.ucm.es/stream/), Paleoclimate Modelling and Analysis (PalMA, https://www.ucm.es/palma), TROPical climate variability and Atmospheric teleconnections (TROPA, http://tropa.fis.ucm.es/) and Micrometeorology and Climate Variability, https://www.ucm.es/grupos/grupo/430)
